YEAR 8 - VISUAL LITERACY

Lucky Year 8s!

Welcome to your unit on Visual Literacy.

Now, before we do anything else, make a choice of the Picture Book you'd like to read:

The Lorax

or

The Rabbits

* YOU MAY ONLY PICK ONE BOOK *

If you shift your gaze to the right >>>>>>>>
You will find that there are activities for you to complete for both books.

BUT BEFORE ALL THAT...

You need to know a little bit about Picture Books and Visual Literacy

Copy the information in the table down - your teacher will be checking!

What is a Picture Book? A picture book is one in which pictures predominantly tell the story. Some picture books are wordless and some use pictures and written text to contribute to the narrative.
What is Visual Literacy? Visual literacy is the ability to recognise and understand ideas conveyed through images.
How do they relate? Picture Books relate to Visual Literacy as they can support the learning of key Visual Literacy skills like how visual images work, how they relate to particular socio-cultural formations, and how viewers go about positioning themselves and relating to the positions implied by a visual text.

Now, have a scroll through the slide show below to get a feel for what Visual Literacy techniques you  might be learning about when you read your selected Picture Book.

Once you have done this, you may choose either The Lorax or The Rabbits and get started!
